Tain Pipe Band, 1949

This splendid picture of the 1949 Tain Pipe Band was taken at Invergordon Games. It must have been warm under those skins. Unfortunately we have no names for these well rigged out gentlemen.

Pipe majors nickname was Donnie Patchy. Tenor drummer is Raymond Macdonald who founded the bakery firm Macdonalds in Wick, and is also the son of Sandy the bass drummer. Piper on Sandys left is Christopher Skinner from Inver. Side drummer with glasses at front I think is Lachie Gallie. Those were days.

Fourth from the right at the back is Sandy Forbes and next to him on his right is Duncan MacPherson - my father. The had both been in the army together and both spent many happy years playing in the band during the 1950's. My father worked at Glenmorangie Distillery for 34 years and Sandy spent many years as an ambulance driver in the town although he left for a few years to live in Australia. Sandy was still playing with the present day Tain Pipe band when he was 70+ until a few years ago. He was and is a superb piper and composer of pipe tunes. The drummer at the front far left is I think Ken Murray who also spent many years working at Glenmorangie Distillery. I have many fond childhood memories of the members of this band and still have the tunic and kilt my father was wearing in this photograph.

Fourth from the right at the back is Sandy Forbes, and third on the right is Duncan MacPherson - my father. They had both been in the army together - this is where my father Duncan learned to play the pipes and to highland dance. 1949 was the year my parents married and Sandy was their Best Man. My father played with the band right through the fifties as did Sandy although he spent a few years living in Australia. My father was a distiller at Glenmorangie Distiller for 34 years and Sandy was one of our Ambulance drivers for a few years. Sandy was still marching and playing with the present day Tain Pipe Band aged 70+ until a few years ago. The drummer in the front row far left is I think Ken Murray another Glenmorangie Distillery worker. I have very fond memories of the years my father played with the pipe band and remember many of its members. I still have his tunic and kilt which he was wearing in the picture - it is still hanging in a wardrobe

Donny Ross the pipe major! I spent many hours in the cellar workshop of the shoe shop he worked in as a cobbler in the late 50s and 60s ,to this day the smell of leather glue and smouldering rubber in repairing shoes will evoke in me the memories of his wisdom to me as a wee boy ! I hope he is looking down on me and I have made him proud !
