Snuff boxes

Taking snuff, or powdered tobacco, was widespread throughout the Highlands from the 17th century and was not overtaken in popularity by smoking until the end of the 19th. The most important item of equipment for a snuff-taker was an airtight container in which to keep the snuff, and these snuff boxes or snuff mulls were made in large numbers in a wide variety of materials, including glass, silver, horn, wood, pewter and porcelain. They were often given as presents and bear their owner's initials and sometimes a date and inscription.
