This view of the interior of the Collegiate Church in Tain is looking East. The reconstructed Regent Moray Pulpit can be seen, middle right, with the three sedilla (a group of seats for the clergy set into the south wall) just beyond the pulpit. The memorials to Patrick Hamilton (Abbot of Fearn and Reformation martyr) and Thomas Hog (minister in Kiltearn and born in Tain) can be seen at the far end side by side beneath the east window.

This view of the interior of the Collegiate Church in Tain is looking West.
The reconstructed Regent Moray pulpit can be seen Middle left, (on the south wall). Some memorial tablets to important people associated with Tain are shown, front left, on the North wall near the far end of which a recessed tomb can be seen. As with view 1 the lack of furnishings reflects the fact that in common with other churches it was stripped of its fittings following the Reformation.

This post card shows a large crowd participating in the Sacraments service in the open air at Ferintosh in 1873. This would have been quite a common ocurrence at that time. Scattered communities could not all have their own church and their own minister. People would have come from far and wide to attend this important occasion.

This plan of the former Collegiate Church but then the Parish Church of Tain was drawn by James Shand, a teacher in Tain. It shows all the additions made in the years following the Reformation. On the south wall he has marked part of the foundations of a transept or porch. The mark where the roof of this joined the main wall of the church can still be seen. Ross the Dairy's house and garden wall are on the left of this photo with Tommy Bogg's grocer shop beyond, later owned by Donald Leitch. St Andrew's Church can be seen at the far end. Gordon Maitland (wearing the bowler hat) was one of the Maitland family of architects who were responsible for many of the fine buildings of Tain built in the latter part of the 19th and early part of the 20th Centuries. He was the grandson of the founder, Andrew Maitland, and worked in the business for over 20 years before leaving for Paris in the 1920's to take up sculpture. This Church was built towards the end of the 19th century (1890-91) and was designed by a local firm of architects, Andrew Maitland & Sons. Its Gothic style with traceried windows and galleries etc. makes it very different from most Scottish churches. It was originally built for the Free Church who later united with the United Presbyterian Church to form the United Free Church in 1900. Today it is the Parish Church of Tain.

A hand tinted post card published by Macpherson Brothers, Tain, showing a front view of the then Parish Church. Knockbreck Street is seen on the right. This building was completed in 1814 and took over from the Collegiate Church which was too small due to the increase in the population of the parish. It remained as a church untill about 1944. It was purchased by the Town Council in 1946 and became the Town Hall, now the Duthac Centre. The post card was never used.
