Standing in the centre of the photograph is Sapper Alexander R Thomson was born in Edinburgh. He was married to Johanna Thomson of Manse Street, Tain, with one child. Alex joined the Royal Engineers and was wounded in France. He died in hospital in England aged 34.

Photograph Collection of Thomas Robert Ross (born Strathpeffer, Scotland1891-1977). Photo of his brother James McDonald Ross (born Nov 17, 1893 - Nov 13, 1916) Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve -Able Seaman on Howe Ballalion. Family stories says he was killed in action by a sniper. His father was John Anderson Ross and mother Jane McDonald and they lived in Carrbridge, Scotland.

The photograph was provided by Kate. Her Grandfather Maclennan served in the Lovat Scouts during the First World War. The family have a strong connection with Balintore. Does anyone recognise these men or where it could have been taken?

Photo of Dr Elizabeth Ness Macbean Ross in Bakhtiari costume taken in about 1909. She was born in Tain in 1878 and studied medicine at Glasgow University graduating in 1901. For several years she was the local doctor on Colonsay and Oronsay and left in 1907 to go to Iran. She worked with the Bakhtiari tribe in the Zagros Mountains in the west of Iran, with long periods out of contact with other Europeans, and wrote a book about her time there. She worked her way home from Iran as a ship's doctor, srudied tropical medicine in London, went to Japan on the Glenlogan as the first woman doctor on a liner and died of typhus in 1915 while working as a military doctor in Serbia. She is buried there at Kragujevatz.

This scene depicts the unveiling of the War Memorial (WW1?) in memory of fallen soldiers from Ardgay & Bonar Bridge. Does anyone know the gentleman standing beside the memorial who presumably is performing the ceremony?

This World War I Army Camp housing Black Watch soldiers was located near Nigg. The huts appear to be constructed of corrugated iron but efforts have been made to brighten up the surroundings. Note the neatly laid out and well maintained flower beds.

This scene shows the Lovat Scouts (so called because they were founded by Lord Lovat) riding along the High Street on their way to camp on either Tain Links or the Morrich More, probably during or leading up to WWI.

Here the Lovat Scouts are lined up with horses and horse drawn cariages in front of their camp on the Fendom. As with Picture #0152.90
it was probably taken during or leading up to WW1. Highlanders were valued for their stalking and shooting skills and therefore made up a large part of the scout troops.

This post card by Ross, (Booksellers) Tain illustrates the extra responsibilities the Lovat Scouts had compared to ordinary soldiers. They didn't just have their own kit to look after. The Lovat Scouts were raised in 1900, mainly originally from Highland ghillies, by the 16th Lord Lovat 3 months after the outbreak of the Boer War. Their purpose was to match the elusive Boers whose speed, surprise, and superior fieldcraft, reconnaissance and marksmanship had inflicted heavy casualties on the British Regular Army. They and their successors distinguished themselves in South Africa and the two World Wars.
