Christopher 'Christy' Grant, pictured with the Pattison Cup, Cordiner Cup, Perrins Cup and the Ross-shire Junior Cup in 1963 - one of the club's most successful seasons as members of the Ross-shire Welfare league.Christy was a key figure behind the scenes for the club during the 1960s and 70s and played an instrumental part in taking the club from the amateur ranks into the North Reserve League.Christy sadly passed away in 1981 aged 40. My Great great great great grandfather Gordon Ross, schoolmaster, of Helmsdale. Lived 1791 - 1868. This photograph has been handed down and came to me via my Great grandmother, Elspeth Sutherland Still (nee Christian). There is a memorial to Gordon Ross in the churchyard at Helmsdale. The original photograph measures 6 x 9 cm.

Here is Tain's first rock band - The Rough Diamonds - pictured around 1964. The photo was taken in The Grove beside the old Post Office. From left to right we have David Ross, David Bremner, Robert Mackay and Alex Graham.

The boys were a little short of sound equipment when the photo was taken, but by 1966 they were playing regularly in Tain Town Hall and around the north. They broke up in September 1968 when the two Davids left for further education in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Robert and Alex went on to form The Midas Touch with Stewart Macpherson.

A citrine jewel on a gold swivel (a fob for a waistcoat watch-chain) that belonged to my great-great-grandfather, David Mackenzie (1815-1903), who was a tenant farmer by the village of Edderton, near Tain. He was the father of eleven children, three of whom are also shown in the Image Library, namely Murdo, Charles and Jessie (my great-grandmother).

Jessie nÃ©e Mackenzie was my great-grandmother. She was born in 1854 at a farm by the village of Edderton, near Tain (Rhamore farm, aka. Rathmore). She was one of eleven children of tenant farmers, Jessie & David Mackenzie. Two of their sons, Murdo and Charles, are also shown in photographs in the Image Museum.
David Mackenzie later took the tenancy of nearby Craigroy farm, which passed to his youngest son, Robert, and then to the latterâ€™s only son, David, who held it until 2000 (but as he had no issue it passed out of the family).
On June 2nd, 1879, my great-grandmother, Jessie, wed a shepherd named John Gallie, and just two days later they embarked on the clipper ship, the â€œNelsonâ€, which sailed from the Clyde. On August 28th, it arrived at Otago on the South Island of New Zealand, where shepherds were in much demand for the sheep rearing industry, and there he became a sheep ranch manager. Unfortunately, he died aged only 27 on March 21st, 1883, from the effects of an appendicitis, and was buried in Dunedin. However, the widowed Jessie (with two young daughters) decided to return to her parental home in Edderton; and in 1895 she married my great-grandfather, Alexander MacArthur, who was a farmer in Nairnshire. Jessie died on August 8th, 1941, and was buried in Cawdor, Nairnshire.

This is Ronnie Duncan at work in the TV workshop of DW Shivas/Wyvis Electrics. It was taken in 1969. Apart from being a TV repair workshop it also served as a drop in/general chat centre for both the worthies and notables of the town.

Glenmorangie House Cadboll c 1933.My grandfather,Donald Munro, worked as a ploughman at Cadboll and for a time lived with his wife Helen (nee Bethune) in one of the cottages attached to Glenmorangie House. John Graham Macdonald, governor of Easter Ross Union Poorhouse 1870/71 â€“ 1901.
Born circa 1833, Currie, Midlothian â€“ died 24 May 1903, Berwick on Tweed. Gave up his job and moved to live with his daughter Catherine in Berwick on Tweed when his wife Agnes who was matron died in May 1901. John was a baker before enlisting for 10 years as a private in The 1st Bengal fusiliers on the 2nd June 1852. In October 1860 he was injured in the left arm by a musket ball and returned to England as unfit for duty in June 1861 where he was awarded a Chelsea Out Pension of 9d a week. He became a warder at Edinburgh prison and married Agnes Kennedy the sister of one of his fellow officers. The couple had three children in Edinburgh before taking up their position in the poor house in 1870/71 where they had a further 4 children.

The photo is of the staff of Ardgay Post Office (Ardgay1) taken around 1906 just after the building was completed. The original Post Office in the village was situated at the Poplars Farm.
As far as we know the staff are as follows:

I believe this picture shows my grandfather William Thomson together with his brother and three sisters probably taken around 1910. From left to right they are Mary (May); William; Janet (Jenny); Jane (Jean); James. Their parents Alexander and Mary Thomson ran the Railway Hotel from 1908 until 1927 having previously run the Masons Arms in Dingwall. Alexander died in 1909 after which Mary , assisted by her sister Annie Cowper ran the hotel until she retired to Glasgow. May was Dux of Tain Royal Academy in 1922 however she died whilst still a student at Edinburgh University in 1924.

Tain Royal Academy Orchestra 1966/7

This picture was taken at harvest time on one of the Arabella holdings in 1946. Mrs Jean Macdonald (nee Ross) is seen with her sister Molly (married name Ferguson) to her left , her daughter Margaret (later Macleod) on her right and surrounded by a group of prisoners of war who were helping with the harvesting. In 1919 the Land Settlement (Scotland) Act extended the powers of the Scottish Board of Agriculture & Fisheries so they could buy farms and divide them as appropriate into small holdings which returning forces men could take up. This led to the sub-division of some former large farms, including in Easter Ross, in the 1920s & 1930s. The Arabella small holdings were part of this scheme. Other places in Easter Ross where Dept. of Agriculture small holdings were created were - the Arboll area near Inver; and an area near Fearn.Local resident Ian Wallace and Tain & District Museum are currently working on a project about the Arabella area in general and the holdings in particular. Although not a native of Tain, Ronnie Duncan was a well known Tain personality and lived most of his life in Tain. He is seen here plying his trade as an electrician, repairing one of the early TV sets in Donnie Shivas's workshop which was on King Street. He was a keen golfer and was for a time Secretary of Tain Golf Club. a member of Lodge St Duthus and amateur poet.
This image was scanned from one of George Hamilton's slides - another local personality and businessman. It was probably taken in the late 1950s/early 1960's.

We believe this picture of a float was constucted by the Tain Scouts as part of the Tain Carnival of c1946/7. They are obviously making a social/political commentary. In the background is the old Co-op stores at the top of King Street, now occupied by Mr. Shafi's drapery business. Attached to this building on the left we can see the old bakehouse now long gone. This bakehouse was, among others, owned at one time by James Robertson, baker, who was Provost of Tain 1921-24. The last private baker to use it was Alexander before it was taken over by the Co-op.

This is taken from a slide by George Hamilton and shows Alistair Macdonald in his Provost's robe posing in the Council Chamber. He was Tain's Provost from 1954 till 1958 and was proprietor of the Tain Laundry and Lemonade Works, hence the nickname

This picture shows the Governor and Matron (Mr & Mrs John Fraser) and two other staff outside the central house around which the Easter Ross Union Poorhousewas built. It was completed in 1850. ( Prior to the the 1843 Scottish Poor Law, Parochial Boards had organised poor relief and made decisions as to who received it and how much.) Staff consisted of a Governor, a Matron, and Medical Officers and Servants. The number of the latter two varied. Most of the food, an entirely vegetarian diet was grown on land (eventually amounting to 21 acres) owned by the Easter Ross Union. This part is now a private home and the rest of the buildings have been demolished. See also Picture #407

Easter Ross union Poorhouse (Arthurville)

Another picture from the Easter Ross Union Poorhouse - see also Picture #406 Our information says c 1910 but this may be an earlier photograph. It shows a row of staff at the back with some of the residents in the two front rows. The number of inmates rose from about 32 at the 1841 Census to 78 by the 1891 census going down again to about 40 in 1901. As can be seen, residents varied in age from babes in arms up to 70+. Sometimes there were whole families staying there at a time and there might be up to about a dozen or more of school age. They came mainly from the parishes of Easter Ross but occasionally from further afield. On later death certificates (1920s) the address is given as 20 Scotsburn Road instead of the Easter Ross Union Poorhouse.

This dramatic picture shows Neil D Forbes' garage going up in flames c1950, perhaps earlier. Given the close proximity of the petrol pumps the consequences could have been very serious. It was situated near the foot of Scotsburn Road and part of the concrete base on which the pumps stood can still be seen beside the pavement where the flower bed is close by.

In the Aldie Burn forest area a few hundred yards north of the ruins of Culpleasant and off the track leading to the ruin of Causewayend (GR 742798), a small granite gravestone bears the following inscription –

GEORDIE/ THE FAITHFUL FRIEND AND COMPANION/ FOR ELEVEN YEARS OF JOHN DEWAR/ KILLED BY A ROAD HOG NEAR PERTH/ 9TH AUG. 1928/ SERVED WITH THE 3RD BAT. THE CAMERONIANS/ 1917-18 For further information about John Dewar see Picture #297

Geordie's Grave

There is a brass plaque in the St Duthus CollegiateChurch in Tain which bears the following inscription, “To the glory of God and in undying memory of Dr. Elizabeth Ness Macbean Ross who voluntarily gave her life during the European War, to help the typhus stricken Serbian soldiers and died in the Military Hospital, Krasgujevtz, Serbia, 14th February, 1915. This tablet has been erected, and hospital beds endowed in Serbia, by public subscription, in remembrance of the noble life and sacrifice of one whose home was for many years in Tain.”

Elizabeth Macbean Ross qualified as MB and Ch.B at Glasgow University in 1901. For most of her home life was spent in Tain. Not content with being one of the few qualified women doctors of her day, this remarkable woman had a varied, albeit fairly short, career much of it pursued under her own steam.

William Tavish Mactavish (b. 1845, d. 1915) was a solicitor in Tain. He was the son of Alexander Mactavish, solicitor in Inverness. This picture was taken by William Smith, photographer in Tain, probably c1900-1910. Mr Mactavish is shown here with his wife (seated) and 3 sisters, the Misses Humphrey. Mrs. Mactavish was also a Humphrey. William's son Alexander (Alick) carried on his father's practice in Tain. See Picture #400.

Alexander (Alick) Mactavish, seen here teeing off on the first tee at Tain Golf Club, was the solicitor son of Willaim T Mactavish, also solicitor in Tain (see Picture #399). This picture may have been taken in the 1920's when his prowess as a golfer was at its height. He was Secretary of the club from 1934-1952, Captain in 1929 and President 1957-58. Along with one or two other low handicappers of that time , he was one of the club's characters who saw no need for expensive golf equipment but played in his normal working clothes.

This large granite boulder lies near Glenmorangie Distillery on the left hand side of the A9 road going north from Tain. It had been carried to this spot during the Ice Age and left behind when the ice melted. As you can see, it bears the inscription,

We hope that someone can help us identify the people in this image of an unknown family group. All we know is that it was taken in Tain in 1901. Wendy Atkinson who owns the original photograph has given us the following information which may or may not be related to the people in the photograph

Her grandmother, Joanna Ross Macdonald, was born in Tain and her great grandfather was a Hugh Ross Macdonald. Hugh was the son of a William Macdonald and Elizabeth Ross. William had a drapery business in Tain before he died in 1835. Wendy's mother spent her childhood holidays in Tain.

Photo of Dr Elizabeth Ness Macbean Ross in Bakhtiari costume taken in about 1909. She was born in Tain in 1878 and studied medicine at Glasgow University graduating in 1901. For several years she was the local doctor on Colonsay and Oronsay and left in 1907 to go to Iran. She worked with the Bakhtiari tribe in the Zagros Mountains in the west of Iran, with long periods out of contact with other Europeans, and wrote a book about her time there. She worked her way home from Iran as a ship's doctor, srudied tropical medicine in London, went to Japan on the Glenlogan as the first woman doctor on a liner and died of typhus in 1915 while working as a military doctor in Serbia. She is buried there at Kragujevatz.

Lealty House was opposite Ardross Castle and was occupied by the Munro family till 1848, when they agreed to exchange it for Rockfield, near Portmahomack at the request of Sir Alex. Matheson of Ardross, presumably because he did not want anyone living in such close proximity to the castle. This photo was taken in !921 when members of the Munro family were revisiting their old home. By 1985 it had no roof and the fairly extensive adjoining steadings had been destroyed. The above watercolour was probably painted sometime during the 1920-30s, possibly by a pupil or teacher of the then Royal Academy of Tain as the contributor's aunt was an Art teacher there during the period c1915-45. This relatively harmless looking gentleman called William Grant, a sailor from Portmahomack, is reputed to have cut a cross (X) on an old lady's forehead because he blamed her for poor catches. He sibsequently ended up in jail in Tain.

Alex Morrison of Morrison's, Tain, constuction company, and John Fisher Ross (Area Manager, Morrison's) are pictures with the sun dial donated by Alex Morrison for the newly constructed Rose Garden. The garden was created as part of Tain's 9th Centenary celebrations in 1966.

Charles James Embleton, seen here with his father, George Embleton, served on HMS Exeter as a stoker while it was engaged in the Battle of the River Plate against the German ship the Graf Spee during WWII. The Embleton family lived in Fountain Road, Tain. Charlie, as he was known, was later presented with a silver tea service and gold wristlet watch from the town to commemorate his part in such an epic incident. The tea service was returned to the town a few years ago and is currently in the museum's keeping.

Murdo Mackenzie was born in Rhamore, Edderton in 1850, son of a small tenant farmer on the Balnagown Estate. He was one of many Scots who took apart in the great cattle rearing industry in the Great Plains of North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some merely became cowboys but others played a leading role in the large cattle companies, a number of which were registered and organised from Scotland. Murdo featured in several associations but is best known as the manager of the giant Matador Land & Cattle Company based in Texas. He held this post from 1891 to 1911 and again from 1922 to 1937. His two sons and a nephew were also involved with this company. More information about this interesting subject and Murdo's part in it can be found in

The Queen Mother is seen conversing with Mr & Mrs Rhind (parents of Councillor Alasdair Rhind) in Tain High Street during her visit to Tain for the opening of the Dornoch Bridge. Peter Alexander Cameron Mackenzie became the Count de Serra Largo. After coming to Tain, he lived in Tarlogie House and both he and his wife took an active part in the life of the Tain area. They are seen here with their children - Cecil, Percy, Lionel, Raoul, Zsa Zsa, Maimie and Edward. This is one of a number of photocopies from the family album given to the museum by a grandson of the Count.

This Golden Wedding celebration was held in the Hayes Hall, Invergordon. The couple went to live at Cullisse Farm on Hogmany, 1949, where Pat worked until early retirement due to illness, after which they continued to live at the farm. Pat died in January 2004.

This shows a paper conservator working on a document found at the bottom of a box in the cellar of the museum store. The document, which was a list of the magistrates and councillors of Tain from 1680 to 1720, was badly damaged at the edges and too fragile to unfold. It was conserved using a new technique in which a paper solution was bonded to the damaged edges by vacuum suction, which meant that none of the surviving writing was obscured. When conservation was complete the document was stable and robust enough to be handled and transcribed. The transcription is available in the Tain burgh records section of the document library on the main website. The conservation work was funded by the Tain Common Good Fund and the Scottish Museums Council.

Card produced by William Smith in 1855 advertising his latest photographic service. He was pretty up to date - the collodion process was introduced in 1850. He mentions having built a glasshouse. Unfortunately we do not know where this was, although his studio was right opposite the building that is now the museum on Castle Brae.

Miss Rosa succeeded as Chief of Clan Ross on the death of her elder sister in 1957. She was born at Balnagore, Fearn. Her grandmother was heiress to the line of both Pitcalnie and Ross. Miss Rosa who subsequently took the name of Ross along with her family name of Williamson, died at her home, Ord House in Tain, at the age of 99 years on 24th March, 1968.

She retained all the old family documents, most of which are now in Edinburgh, and was the last of the Pitcalnie Rosses. On her death, the Chiefship and armorial dignities passed to the house of Shandwick.

We have no actual date for this line-up of four horsemen with their cart load of logs. It could possibly be the 1930's or even later. The rolling stock behind the carts includes 5 open trucks, a cattle truck, a closed van, a gurrd's van and one passenger coach. In the middle background is the slaughter house. The names John Ross, carter, and Davie Cowie are written on the back of this photgraph but with no indication where they are positioned.

These proud looking lads make up a Tain Juvenile team who in 1947 won the Pieraccini Cup. This cup was provided by Leo Pieraccini, the founder of The Chocolate Shop, confectionery and cafe, in Tain High Street. ( See Picture #253 ) It was one of many things Leo did to encourage the local youngsters to participate in sport.

This much revered and long lived citizen of Tain was born in Rosskeen in 1813 but moved to Tain in 1830 and remained till he died in 1911. He was a leading public figure both in religion and in public life, being a councillor for 42 years and a magistrate for 32 years.

Mrs Munro (maiden name, Burnett) was the mother of Tain Museum founder Rosemary Mackenzie. She was the daughter of the scupltor who made the bust of Kenneth Murray, part of the Murray Monument in the High Street. She came to Tain as an art teacher and married W J Munro who was County Clerk.

C W Ross(Charlie) had a stationers and booksellers business. It was in what is now part of Ross the Chemist (to the left hand side as you enter). He lived in Esther Place. He was also the Registrar for Tain and a keen photographer. He produced many post cards from his own photographs. Any of the images in this image library with the catalogue number 0152 are taken from an album of his photographs. His youngest and only surviving son, Bruce Ross, lives in Perth, Australia.

Pat Swanson thinks this ph0to showing Benny Bremner sprinkling slipperine on the floor in preparation for the Nigg Badminton Club Dance, was taken c1963. For those not familiar with the practice, slipperine was, as the name suggests, used to make the dance floor slippy. The art was to sprinkle sufficient to allow the dancers to glide across the floor but not too much as to be dangerous.

According to Pat Swanson, the stores counter at Tain Motors was used as a bar for the employees New Year holiday break up celebrations. Davie Ross was the car salesman and Tommy Rostock, the Garage Manager. He did not say to what extent the two are posing for the camera. If not, it looks as if the photo was taken well on into the celebrations.

This is a lovely photo of a group of barefooted boys playing about in the garden of a large house, possibly Balnagown Castle, and being closely observed by a passing family or staff member. The picture doesn't have the photographer's name on it but it may have been taken by William Smith. As well as being Tain's photographer and stationer, he also started a Ragged Sabbath School in 1858 and was involved in running it for many years. The pupils were occasionally invited to Balnagown for tea as a treat.

Photo of a smartly dressed young man leaning against a boat while lighting his cigarette. Location unknown - possibly west coast? Unfortunately the registration letters on the boat are illegible. This is one of several photos of the same occasion, which seems to have been an outing with a lady friend.

This picture was taken during a ceremony of planting a tree to commemorate King Edward VII's Coronation in the park below the churchyard. It shows a town council group (which includes A Ross; Provost Fowler; Baillie Gallie; Wm Ross; A MacDuff ross; Baillie Wallace) watched by a substantial crowd. This is a scene which is completely changed. The park is now overshadowed by trees and bushes and the thatched buildings in the background together with the building whose gable shows on the right hand side with its fine wall and arched gateway have all disappeared.

Here we see John Ross of Aldie Mill demonstrating turning grain in October 1963. The mill eventually closed in 1971. It was renovated and opened in 1996 as a tourist attraction and operated as such for a few years before being converted into a house.

Compared to Picture #249 the style of the windows and the clothing would suggest this photo shows the shop at a later date. There are also marks/holes in the stonework which could be where the fixtures shown in picture 249 were attached. The grills have also gone and the pavement appears to have been laid with Caithness flagstones. Note the much larger sign and the wicker hampers - probably awaiting collection and possibly containing clothes going off to Pullars for drying or cleaning. Although the sign is gone the shop is known to still have been a Pullars agent while trading under the name George Henderson.

The King's Causeway is said to have been built by the people of Tain for James IV when they heard he was coming barefoot on pilgrimage to the shrine of St Duthac. Most of the line followed by the causeway is now occupied by a more modern road surface but part of the original road was left out at a bend, the newer road taking a straighter course. The picture shows part of this being cleared by Tain Academy pupils (Alison Napier in the front middle) in the mid 1970's. This is the funeral of Commander Wolfe-Murray ( see Picture #214). Despite it being such a wet day a reasonably large number of the public have turned out to witness the cortege led by fair sized contingent of navy personnel, indicating that Commander Wolfe-Murray was held in high regard.

Stereoscopic portrait photograph of Lady Ross of Balnagown with viewer, taken in about 1870. It consists of two images of Lady Ross taken from slightly different angles, mounted in an ornately carved wooden box with an integral viewer patented by Mascher of Philadelphia in 1852.

Lady Ross was Rebecca Barnes, the second wife of Sir Charles William Augustus Lockhart Ross and mother of Sir Charles Henry Augustus Frederick Lockhart Ross, the last of the Lockhart Rosses. After her husband died in 1883 she managed the Balnagown estate until the young Sir Charles was 21 in 1893.

Lady Ross had a stormy relationship with her son, who was determined to oust her from Balnagown Castle when he came into his inheritance. He eventually brought legal proceedings against her for mismanagement of the estate, setting off on a lifelong career of litigation against those he felt had wronged him.

Patricia Burnley Ellison of Louisville, Kentucky, a renowned American beauty, became the second wife of Sir Charles Ross of Balnagown in 1901. This picture was taken by a photographer called Klauber in Louisville in about 1900.

Sir Charles, born in 1872, married three times. His first marriage to Winifred Berens was dissolved in 1897. During his subsequent marriage to Patricia Ellison he was cited as co-respondent in numerous divorce proceedings before she divorced him in a blaze of publicity in 1930. His last marriage, in 1938, was to his American secretary, Dorothy Mercado, who inherited Balnagown after his death in 1942.

Photograph of Dorothy Mercado, who became the third wife of Sir Charles Ross of Balnagown in 1938, taken on board the Queen Mary. Sir Charles was based in North America for much of his adult life and Dorothy Mercado was his American secretary. His previous two marriages had been to Winifred Berens in 1893 and Patricia Ellison in 1901. Both ended in divorce.

After Sir Charles' death in 1942, the third Lady Ross inherited the castle and estates which were heavily encumbered with debt. Attempts by her and later by her second husband to run the estates as a sporting venture were not a great success and by the late 1960s much of the estate had been sold and the castle itself was in a state of decay. The castle and what remained of the estate was bought by Mohamed al Fayed in 1972.

Photograph of Sir Charles Ross of Balnagown at Eton in the late 1880s. Sir Charles was born in 1872 and attended Eton and Cambridge. He was a keen sportsman and while at Eton designed and patented his first rifle. At Cambridge he had the distinction of being the first married rowing blue, having married against his mother's wishes shortly after his twenty-first birthday.

William Smith (1824-1906) was a highly skilled and innovative photographer who throughout his long career photographed the scenes, occasions and people of his day and has left us with a vivid record of 19th century life. When he first moved to Tain he had a bookseller and newsagent business in the High Street then later had his studio and shop in Castle Brae. He was a church elder and became involved in all sorts of charitable work, most notably the Tain Ragged school.

The present Tain Royal Academy in Scotsburn Road replaced the one in Academy Street, which opened in 1813. The opening ceremony of the new Tain Royal Academy in 1969 was conducted in the new assembly hall by A Mackenzie, MP.

This is a group of strawberry pickers, around 1899-1900, in a field which used to be opposite the railway station. It was part of a nursery belonging to WG Holmes, Seed Merchant. The nursery mainly grew strawberries and fruit trees eg apples. pears, plums. It later became a football field and was known as Coronation Park. It is now a depot for a construction firm.

This picture shows Gordon Maitland who was the nephew of Andrew Maitland, and helped him in his Architectural business in Tain.
In the 1920's Gordon left Tain to become a sculptor in Paris, where he died in 1933.

This photo was taken possibly in the early 1930's outside G Urquhart, Butchers in the High Street. It shows L to R: Jean Christie, Dave Urquhart, Barbara Munro(Mrs Urquhart). In the window are cuts of meat and pies with two hanging lamb carcases. This family firm owned two butcher shops (the other one in Portmahomack), operated a van round serving the Edderton, Inver, Portmahomack and Rockfield areas and also owned the Burgage farm. George Urqhuart was Forbie Urquhart's grandfather, Dave Urquhart was his uncle and son of George. Forbie Urquhart ran a drapery, clothing and haberdashery business in Lamington Street.
Next door to the left was Robert Collie, Tailor, and next to that was Strachan, Baker. All three premises are now part of the Gow bakery chain's Tain shop.

John Gallie & Co operated as grocers in Tain during the early part of the 20th century. There were two shops - one in Market Street and this one in Stafford Street. The business was later taken over by Donald Leitch. The photograph shows Mr Leitch on left, with members of Staff. The building to the left is the Carnegie Library.

The photograph shows Mr & Mrs Murray outside Lily Cottage in Manse Street. The cottage still stands, although the porch had to be rebuilt after it was demolished by a lorry.

The back of the original photograph bears hand written comments by a Margo Lauchlan, born in Gtaeshead 1902, and possibly one other. One comment indicates that the photograph was taken by a Kenneth Munro about 1890.

This picture copied from a post card was given to the museum in 1985 with an accompanying note which states the scene is as the donor remembered it 70 years earlier. The turret in the middle foreground is that of Dunskaith House which is now demolished. Other information provided was that the cottage above the turret was occupied by a George Gibson and his two sons; on the right is the Ferry Inn and back left is Craig Lodge. The white spot beside, middle left edge is the white box marking the 1st tee of the old Nigg Golf Course.

This picture of the staff of Scotsburn House taken around 1900 gives an idea of the number of people employed in such houses and thus the large number of people in service generally at that time. The small boy is Donald (Doey) Macdonald and his father is the gamekeeper (with gun), father and grandfather respectively of Kenneth Macdonald, formerly of Arabella, currently living in Scotsburn Road, Tain.

This picture of the Smithy at Culnaha was taken sometime during WWI. The blacksmith (holding the horse's hoof) was called Holmes. His son is to his right and the three girls are his grand-daughters. The soldier was from one of two big army camps nearby and the pony was from the YMCA hut(?).

The Missionary Lighthouse Group was a girls' association started c. 1900 by a Miss Macdonald who had wished to be a missionary. It was carried on by Margaret MacBean Ross and later restarted by Jane Macbean Ross at Everest, Knockbreck Road, Tain.

This Church was built towards the end of the 19th century (1890-91) and was designed by a local firm of architects, Andrew Maitland & Sons. Its Gothic style with traceried windows and galleries etc. makes it very different from most Scottish churches. It was originally built for the Free Church who later united with the United Presbyterian Church to form the United Free Church in 1900. Today it is the Parish Church of Tain.

St Mary's Well was a fresh water spring lying between the high and low watermarks on the Blarliath shore and could be accessed at low tide It was reputed to have health giving properties, especially for curing consumption. This tinted photograph shows Georgina Macdonald, probably some time in the 1930's. She frequently collected water from the spring and is supposed to have built the stone surround. The site of the well can still be located today by the presence of three large blocks of stone, one of which is seen behind Georgina. It has been claimed that these blocks were originally part of pillars marking the entrance to Tain Castle garden.

Edderton House, overlooked the Dornoch Firth but was demolished in the 1950's. It was part of quite an extensive estate. The house's last owner was a Mr Knight, Underwriter, London. The clocktower shown in the picture still stands

This picture of a group of Sutherland crofters was taken at the foot of a croft known as Leslie's croft (location unknown), just after they had been released from Dornoch Jail. They had been arrested for resisting eviction orders. The long horns were used by the women to summon the men back to the croft when the Sheriff's men were spotted coming up the glen. They are mainly members of a family called Calder.

This picture was taken after the inauguration ceremony of George Ferguson as Provost. Alex MacMillan was chosen to open Tain's Celebrations on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee, June 2002, being the only surviving Freeman of Tain.

This group photo is taken at the entrance to the old Town Hall in Tower Street (later used as a cinema and currently awaiting renovation) following the Freedom of the Burgh Presentations to Sir Arthur Bignold, MP, and Colonel James Alex. Francis Humberston Stewart Mackenzie of Seaforth in 1907. Sir Arthur is probably the white bearded gentleman at the front with Lady Bignold beside him. Colonel Mackenzie could be the gentleman in spats leaning against the balustrade. Also in the picture are various councillors, baillies and other dignatories (including the Countess-Dowager of Moray and Sir Kenneth Matheson, Bart. of Lochalsh) and leading businessmen. A cake and wine banquet took place afterwards in the Royal Hotel.

A sepia photo by William Smith, Photographer, Tain, of the interior of the workshop, in Upper King Street, of a skilled cabinet maker called Danny Thompson. Thompson did all the wood work when Morangie House was built for the Gallies in 1903 and presented them with a carved wooden chair, similar to the one in the picture, as handsel or moving in present. On the left of the picture is W Fraser (father of Donald) who later bought the business.

A number of Tain's dignataries and noted citizens along with engineers and burgh workmen are shown at St George's well , near Culpleasant during the 1910 annual inspection of the Burgh's water works. These works established in 1871 provided Tain with an abundant and pure water supply for many years.

This shows the planting of a tree in the collegiate churchyard in Tain to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. The group consists of members of the town council, some of whom are wearing masonic aprons. Provost James Vass is standing to the right of the tree holding a small ceremonial spade. Although the tree itself is no longer there, a cast iron commemorative collar which fitted on the trunk is in the museum collection, and one of Dr Vass's descendants has the engraved ceremonial spade.
