While the Glenlogan was at Kowloon wharf on Saturday morning few people realised that she carried for the first time a lady doctor, a Scottish lady who has had many thrilling adventures in Persia, where she lived for over seven years, holding an important position under the Government. Early on Saturday morning His Excellency the Officer administrating the Government, Hon. Claude Severn, accompanied by his aide-de-camp, went across to Kowloon to invite Dr Ross, the lady referred to, to spend a day at Mountain View. It is interesting to note the boat has accommodation for 38 saloon passengers and proceeds to Kobe, Yokohama, Hankow and Nanking, Hongkong being reached again in about six weeks.

Dr Ross could relate many an exciting experience that she had during the period she was connected with the Persian gendarmerie, and it appears that she had been under fire on more than 100 occasions. She is a chieftainess of one on the tribes, so great was her work appreciated by the people, and strange to relate, when our representative tried to elicit a few facts from captain McGregor about his distinguished lady doctor, he was informed that – contrary to expectations - the Chinese crew on board the ship paid the doctor the greatest respect. Of course, Dr Ross speaks Persian like a native, and it was a revelation to many on board to see the cordial manner in which the Persians at Penang and Singapore greeted her and invited her ashore.

Dr Ross was invalided home ashore some months ago from Karachi, and after a few months in Scotland decided to visit the Far East, and her one hope is that she may see a good deal of rebellious China and the Chinese. The doctor has a rich fund of narrative, and onboard the Glenlogan is a most interesting officer. Her brother is a doctor as well as her sister, another sister is a great poultry expert, one is a missionary at Madras while another is a secretary of Nobel’s. A brother lives in Hongkong.

Their home is Tain, Ross-shire.
