Baillie Alexander Wallace

This William Smith post card is taken from an oil painting by Fiddes Watt.
Alexander Wallace was born in Nonikiln, Rosskeen parish, in 1813. He came to Tain in 1830, was a councillor for 42 years, a magistrate for 32 years, a member of the Free Church for 68 years and a founder of Wallace & Fraser, Ironmonger. He died in Tain in 1911. It was said of him "although he carries the years of a Patriarch and the reputation of a saint, he has the spirits of a schoolboy."

I am really curious to know if this is the son of John Wallace of Nonikiln - and if so - do you have any more information? I believe that Alexander would be cousin to the Rosses on Kincraig - any idea?

This 1880 photograph of "The Bailie" Alexander Wallace predates the 1907 portrait by painter George Fiddes Watt (1873-1960). Although clearly portraits of the same man, the subject is much younger in this photograph. (See "Tain Through Time" collection on line for the Fiddes Watt painting of "Baillie Alexander Wallace.")

My research has shown that "The Bailie" was not the son of John Wallace of Tain (1780-1863) and Catherine Munro (1794-1830). Their son Alexander was born in 1826, not 1813.

I, too, am particularly curious about this Alexander's parents as I have an engraved portrait nearly identical to the 1907 painting that was originally owned by one of my Wallace relations, and I very much wish to know the family connection. Who were his parents?
