Object Description

This document, dated the 27th February 1640, records the formation of the "Northern Committee of Affairs", which was set up by the \'nobilitie & gentrie\' of the Highlands during the Bishop Wars of 1639-1640. The document, perhaps uniquely, is signed by almost all the leading figures of 17th century Easter Ross. Minute of formation of Northern Committee of Affairs. "Forsameikle as the estait of this Church & Kingdome is for the present greivouslie distressed & distractit & that nothing can be moir fitting then concord of all true Christians & Countrymen requyres sound deliberatione with ready executione meetingis of the wholl nobilitie & gentrie cannot be observed so often as requires. We subscryveris of the shrefdome of Inverness grantis full commissione & power to Jhone Earl of Sutherland, George Earle of Seafort, Symone Master of Lovat, David Ross of B., Geo. Gordon broyr to the E. of S., Maister Alexr. M‘K. of Culcowie, Robert Munro of Obsdaill, Rorie M‘K; of Reidcastell, Johne Munro of Lemlair, Wm. Fraser of Culbokie, Hew Ross of Auchnacloich, Colein M. of Kincraig. Walter Innes of Inverbreakie, Hew Ross of Litle Tarrel to be ane committee, neit, advyse of all things required for the good & peaceable government of thir own countris, oblieissing ourselffis to stand to the determinations they or any seven of thame lawfullie meiting & to obey their just desyres under the payne of perjurie & defamtione & as we wish God to help us.
