Pewter Tankard

A stereoscope contained in two brown frames joined together by metal hinges. One frame consists of two slightly differing oval portraits of Lady Ross who is sitting on a button backed chair with her left arm resting on an ornate table, she is wearing a long-waisted pink dress with a white collar and cuffs.

A copper measure [volume not marked] with a flat base. The sides taper up to a wide-lipped mouth. A rolled copper handle is riveted onto this lip and to the side of the jug. Stamped inside the rim - 3 Government inspection stamps [4 crowns above B.T]

A pair of wooden butter pats used for working butter into shape. Each pat is rectangular in shape with a handle. The outside is smooth and the inside is ridged to give this effect to the pats of butter, before selling to the customers.Used by grocer's, this process was often done in the shop for the customer while they waited.

Bell-shaped wooden butter stamp with a wooden handle on top. Thistle head with a leaf on either side surrounded by a fluted border 8mm wide. The top of the handle is 30mm in diameter and 35mm long becoming waisted before reaching the top of the mould.

Grey standard school slate with a wooden surround. A small hole is bored through the top of the wooden frame through which has been threaded a short length of string, at the end of which is tied a piece of cloth for the purpose of erasing. The slate is double-sided.

Hardback school essay book bound at one edge. Containing Maths questions in addition and subtraction, history arguments and themes, some of which are in Latin and English, all handwritten. Several blank pages in the middle of the book. It has a coloured cover with a wavy design.Handwirtten on first page - Libris Jacobi Clarke Coll, Regi, Aberdon July 8th 1746.

A silver Dux medal from Scotsburn School which was awarded to Annie Douglas sometime in the 1930s, the exact date is not known as the date on the back has been scratched away in frustration. The back is inscribed; Alick Mackay Medal. Awarded to Annie Douglas as Dux in Scotsburn Public School.Annie taught at the Scotsburn Sunday school and it is thought that she scored the dates from the medal when she wasn't allowed to go to train as a teacher. The reason being that Annie was the youngest of six children so had to stay at home to look after her parents.

A fragment of a Bartmann Jug also called Bellarmine jug, which is a type of decorated salt-glazed stoneware that was manufactured in Europe throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. The signature decorative detail was a bearded face mask appearing on the lower neck of the vessel. There is also a horseshoe shape marked with dots, both impressed into the clay.This fragment was found on the Links at Tain, in 1996. When the Links were being dug up between the pond and the playpark to install new sewage pipes. This is evidence of trade between Easter Ross and the Continent in the Early Modern period.

This sampler was stitched by Christina Ross who attended a school for girls in Tain in 1857. It is a particularly fine example of the kind of embroidery work that girls produced in Victorian times.The earliest surviving sampler which is signed and dated was made by Jane Bostocke who included the date 1598 in the inscription.Stitching the alphabet began in the 17th century. By the 19th century, samplers were well established as vehicles for religious instruction, geography, English and mathematics. Schoolgirls produced needlework exercises of almanacs, mathematical tables and maps, as well as numbers and letters.
