Dr Aird was the Moderator of the annual "General Assembly" of the *Free* Church of Scotland, and the year this occurred was 1888, not 1870. Source "The Life of Gustavus Aird, AM, DD, Creich", by Alexander MacRae. Dr Aird was only ordained to the ministry of the Church of Scotland (in Croick) two years before the great national "Disruption" when the Free Church of Scotland was formed. He and the vast majority of his congregation joined the Free Church en masse, so he would not have been moderator of the Church of Scotland at any stage.

My Great-Grandfather was born in 1843 at Amatnatua just south east of Croick and have been told he was the fist child christened by the Reverend Dr Aird whe he moved from Croick Church to the Free Church which has now been converted to a house. My great-Grandfather was Christened Gustavus Aird Ross after Reverend Dr Aird, my father was Alistair Gustavus Horne.

I was interested in seeing this picture. I am currently researching a diary about the Rev. Robert Fraser who was a missionary in Epi, New Hebrides (via Tasmania, Australia). There was mention of Rev Aird in his diary.

Gustavus Aird was a cousin of my 2xgreat grandfather Angus McLean as their mothers were sisters and their maiden name was Grant. Both Gustavus' father and Angus' father were witnesses at one of Angus' children's (Janet Ann) christening.
