John Ross was one of my mother's brothers, who operated Aldie Mill with my grandfather, Murdo, who died in 1968 - Murdo also had worked with his own father, Duncan. I lived in the mill house with my parents, grandfather and uncles until I was eleven and John continued to live there until 1987, though working at Nigg and then Invergordon, after the mill closed, when he moved to Quarry Lane, where he stayed until his death in 1992, aged 76 years. He was unmarried and had served in the army throughout WW2, his younger brother, also Murdo,(22), having been lost when the submarine, Traveller, he served on was sunk at the end of 1942.
