In the 1871 Census for Kilmuir Easter, Andrew Smith aged 20, my 2nd great granduncle, was living here as a lodger at Balnagown Castle Gardens and working as an "Under Gardener Apprentice" to James Fairweather, aged 31, a Head Gardener from Forfarshire. Also working there were Alec Ross age 23, a Journeyman Gardener and William Ross, 18, an Apprentice Gardener, both born Fearn. Andrew Smith was born at Garrick, one of three children born to Hugh Rose Smith and Ann McCulloch. He moved south somewhere between the 1871 census and his marriage in the Register Office at Kirkleatham, North Riding of Yorkshire, in July 1877. He continued working as a gardener and by the time of the 1901 census is a "Market Gardener, working on his own account" at Coatham, Redcar. He and his wife had nine children, all born in the Coatham/Redcar area. Andrew died in Coatham in 1928 and is buried there.

It is so interesting that the 1901 image of Balnagown is the same year that Sir Charles married in Louisville Kentucky US, Patricia Burnley Ellison and took her there to live.
