Canasta Party

Year: 1950 | Included in Albums: Businesses / People / Sports and Recreation

Photo Description

This picture, possibly taken in the 1950s shows four well known Tain businessmen enjoying a relaxing game of cards. George Hamilton had a draper's busines, first in the High Street, then in King Street (where Brambles Coffee Shop is today). Hector ("Heckie") Ross was a grocer with a shop in King Street. Donald Strachan had the famous bakery and shop in the High Street. James Mackenzie worked in his father's carpentry business on Shore Road. His father was known as "Dan Heavy" and he was known as "Jimmy Light", reflecting their different physical make up. This image is from the collection of slides belonging to George Hamilton.

This is a classic picture. I don't know how to play Canasta - Heckie looks as if he's trying to see George's cards but perhaps they were playing as partners! Not many people wear three piece suits and ties today even to work, let alone while relaxing.

My father was James Mackenzie and I remember the weekly Canasta parties very well. He told me he was Jimmy Light short for lightning (he was a very good runner) but I wouldnt really know!!!

Sorry I'm late to this... Dad lived in Academy Street and then in Moss Road when he married.
