Sergeant Josef Vanis
Born 27th June 1921 at Liptovska Telpa.
Died 10th April 1945

Sergeant Josef Vanis perished in Liberator aircraft PP-D EV955. The aircraft took off from Tain in the dark, and soon after becoming airborne, it crashed about 1500 yards from the end of the runway at 04.07 hrs. According to local people, the depth charges in the aircraft exploded, breaking a shop window on Tain High Street.

There were nine people on the aircraft and only three survived. Four of the deceased, including Josef, are buried in Tain cemetery;

FLT. SGT. Arnust Hayek aged 28;
FLT. LIEUT. Josef Simet age 30;
SGT. Zdenek Palme aged 30.

Sgt. Rudolf Scholz was buried at St John's Church in Oxford and Otta Khon or Kennedy who died of his wounds a few weeks after the accident was cremated at Golders Green London..
